Decorating With Gourds in Iowa State University Extension
Iowa State University extension horticulturist Henry Taber advises on preparing gourds for home use. Pick gourds with 1 to 2 inches of stem, wash with a one to nine chlorine bleach solution, scrub, rinse, and cure in a dry warm room. Do not let gourds touch to avoid decay. Thin-walled gourds may dry within a month. Thick fleshy gourds require longer curing.
