Hard Journey Across a Blizzard to Shippey's Cabin
The narrative recalls a brutal 17 day winter trek during which Duncombe Richards Smith and others crossed a frozen creek on a board to reach Shippey's cabin for shelter and food. They faced whiteout conditions, frostbite risk, and the loss of companions including Captain Johnson and Wm. Burkholder. The expedition helped settle Pocahontas County lands through preemption, with claims later taken by Guvensey Smith and others. Next, Abbie Gardner Sharp’s captivity tale is promised.
