Rolfe high school beat Renwick 25 to 7 at Renwick with a strong running game after Ganding left early. Puff moved to halfback boosting speed as McAninch and Reckard contributed key scores and interceptions in a hard fought contest.
Members of the 1947 Pocahontas County Farm Bureau Resolutions committee have been appointed by A. H. Turatt president. Chairman is Dean Anderson of Rolfe with Mrs Marl Martin Merton Bratton of Laurens Cecil Lent of Clare Ernest Blomberg of Pocahontas and Mrs H F Olerich V Savery and Roy Schonberger all of Rolfe. The county resolutions committee will begin work immediately to gather ideas and opinions on current agricultural issues. A list of questions for township meetings has been prepared to let members voice views.
Readable fragments outline a weekly lunch plan for Rolfe Consolidated School students. Menu items include Italian spaghetti with cornbread and cottage cheese on October 7, baked beans with buttered rolls on October 8, potatoes and mulled beef sandwiches with beet salad on October 9, and macaroni with spiced apple sauce cake on October 10, each day served with milk.
M W Webb announces a nationwide contest during Rexall One Cent Sale from October 15 to 18 at Rolfe store with two all expense world trips as first prizes and Rio de Janeiro and Hawaii trips among 650 other prizes. Entry blanks available at Webb's Rexall Drugs. postmark by October 31, 1947.
Gilbert Ellis, chairman of Pocahontas AAA, urges county farmers to tailor 1948 conservation plans to local soil conditions. The program aims to maximize production with minimal soil loss, aligning conservation with abundant future food needs amid warlike grain pressures and European crop failures.
R. C. Slattenow of Iowa Falls was appointed division manager of Central States Electric Co. to replace J. C. Damborg. Slattenow, with the company nine years, arrived October 15 to assume duties and will be joined soon by his wife and two daughters aged eight and eleven.
Sally Webb a Cornell College sophomore in Mount Vernon has been pledged to membership in the Delphis a social group for women at Cornell.
Rolfe YW club members earned an excellent rating for their yearbook at the sixth district meeting of the Iowa Federation of Women's Clubs held in Emmetsburg on Wednesday October 10. Thirty six yearbooks entered. three received superior and three excellent. Attending the all day event were Anita Beckord Pearl Bielefeldt Nellie Heald Frances White and other Rolfe women.
Ann Jones of Placerville California was accepted by audition at the Ojai Valley Dramatic School run by Alan Harkness former assistant to Michael Chekhov. She is among a limited group of pupils chosen over Pasadena Playhouse and Repertory Theater. Ann’s background includes prop work for the Ojai Valley Players at the Ventura County Fair. She is the daughter of the late Dr. T D Jones and Mrs Mary Jones.
Marilyn McFadzen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles McFadzen, lost a wrist watch in Fort Dodge in May 1946. An ad yielded no response until a parcel postmarked Fort Dodge arrived recently with no sender name or message, leaving the owner without clues to the watch’s journey.
The record notes several relocations in Rolfe. Verne Jarvis family moved from an apartment in the Fae Show home to the Lind property. Howard Holbrook family moved from the barber shop apartment to the Jack Nelson house. O G Morgan family from Hardy moved into the Lind Elm Street property.
Miss Janice Ferden daughter of Mr and Mrs Lester Ferden and Robert Fuchs son of Mr and Mrs William Fuchs of Laurens were united in marriage at St Margaret’s Catholic church in Laurens. The ceremony was a single ring rite at 8 am on Thursday October 9 performed by Rev D A Tewell. The couple left for a short honeymoon and will reside in Laurens. The wedding party included relatives from West Bend and Algona with 40 guests at a church breakfast.
Miss Eileen Heddinger daughter of Mr. and Mrs W E Heddinger and Matthew Allen son of Mr. and Mrs Milo Allen of Everly Iowa were united in marriage October 1 at St Margaret s Catholic church Rolfe The double ring ceremony was performed by Father D A Tewell The bride wore a green suit with black accessories and carried a white prayer book and rosary Miss Bernice Heddinger was maid of honor George Nedved attended the groom A breakfast at the Pineroom Pocahontas followed the ceremony and a dinner was served at the bride s home for immediate families
The Pocahontas County Council of the Iowa Education Association met at Pocahontas school on Tuesday evening October 14 with 115 members present. President A. D. Henderson led the business session after a meal by the Lutheran Ladies. Guest speaker was Arthur H. Brayton, manager of the Des Moines Convention Bureau. Next meeting set for Rolfe on November 19 with Ruth H. Wagner as speaker.
The Pocahontas County American Legion Auxiliary schedules a meeting Friday at 2 30 PM in the Legion hall at Gilmore City.
Jimmy Tiernan aged three, son of Mr and Mrs John Tiernan, won a Monarch bicycle in a contest held by Robinson Shoe Store in Pocahontas last Saturday. Every shoe purchaser received a ticket and Jimmy held the winning right ticket. He must wait until old enough to ride.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon October 9 at the McIntire Funeral Home and Presbyterian church for Mrs Claudine C Lind Johnson. A quartet sang. burial was in Clinton-Garfield cemetery. She was born February 20 1858 in Denmark and died October 4 1947 in Rolfe. Survived by six children and numerous grandchildren.
Dr and Mrs J E Hynds moved this week to Mrs E W Wilson residence they have leased for two years. Mrs Wilson plans to visit Iowa relatives before joining her daughter in Los Angeles with family. She left for Marshalltown to visit relatives including niece Mrs J C Gifford and Mr Gifford and Mr and Mrs Max Gifford who drove up that morning. Buy a Bond each month.
Miss Lydia Poole spoke to a large Woman's Society of Christian Service group at the Methodist church on October 8. She described Indian women in blue silk saris and noted India’s need for more mission staff as Christianity grows. Poole praised Gandhi and discussed independence, Hindu Muslim tensions, and her work with children, while underscoring India as a lasting mission field.
Two National Guard caravans will tour Iowa for a month starting October 14 from Des Moines. Each route includes 12 to 15 units with officers and enlisted men, showcasing 155 mm howitzers, armored scout cars, ordnance and engineer trucks, and the 75 mm recoilless rifle. P-51 fighters will provide daily air support as caravans visit towns by 9 a.m. and stay until the next morning.
