Harold Fries age 22 suffered a severe bruise after a scaffolding collapse at a new grain elevator construction site in Cylinder Iowa. He fell through the air but did not break any bones.
A speech in the town reflects on suicide as a grim trend and warns that if every person with money in the community acted on such thoughts the home town would quickly grow in population. The speaker suggests society would become more prosperous if mental health and support were improved.
An elderly Ottumwa driver M McInerny 79 years old steadies his big trotter after a wheel collapse halting the sliding cart about 260 yards from the accident. Edward Weihe 29 Tripoli faces manslaughter charges after a fatal car crash in which a 77 year old woman died. Blood tests indicate alcohol presence and intoxication. James Hicks of Montezuma dies from internal injuries after a tin can derby crash at West Liberty. Iowa reports rabies in a Mystic boy and mad animals epidemic with skunks and squirrels. Two runaway colts and bee swarms cause horse deaths. Frogs now require a fishing license under conservation rules.
Mr and Mrs Don Hunsecker of Central City rushed to their turkey pen to save most of the flock from killer dogs but lost 40 birds ahead of Thanksgiving. Esther Price of Marengo was struck in the leg by a stray .22 during a rat hunt and expects to recover.
