Obituary of Nelson H. Shaver last Civil War veteran
Nelson H. Shaver of Prover, Iowa, died September 22, 1929, at age 84. He served in Company 8, Wisconsin Infantry, 1864–65 under Grant, fought in thirteen battles including the Wilderness and Petersburg, married Alice L. Fenton, moved to Powhatan township in 1879, then Plover, Iowa. He was a Mason and Grand Army of the Republic member, widowed wife and children Jenny Roberts, TueHa Shaver, and Arlo B. E. Shaver survive, with a lengthy funeral at the Methodist church and community tributes.
