The amendment to the Social Security Act will cover farm labor regularly employed and employees of non profit groups including Farm Bureau. Farm operators remain excluded from benefits and taxes. A three month qualifying period and subsequent 60 days of continued seasonal work with cash wages at least 50 dollars determine ongoing coverage.

Roof Removal Moves Filling Station to New Site

Workmen at LeMars removed the roof of a filling station by sliding a truck under it with soft tires, stacking wooden blocks to lift the bed. After inflating the tires the truck raised the roof from its foundation and carried it to the new location.

Safety Patrols Hold Excellent Record at Iowa Schools

Floyd L. Link of the Motor Club of Iowa reports school safety patrols protected over 90,000 students across 504 schools with 65 million crossings and only five injuries. Since 1922 patrols reduced adult pedestrian accidents by 91 percent. no school age fatalities at crossings with patrols since 1986.

Reports from the division of preventable diseases in the Iowa State Department of Health note a drop in typhoid cases as carriers spread disease unseen. Five cases so far this year compare with 600 in 1908, while sanitation and vaccines curb outbreaks.
