New washing habits boost efficiency for modern machines
Old laundering methods can harm new automatic washers, says Iowa State experts Naomi and Misa Shank. Shift to a load a day, accumulate clean clothes, and wash promptly to save time, energy, and hot water while protecting fabrics. Regularly use manufacturer guides and dealer demos for best results.

Iowa State expert urges higher hog production next year
E L Quaife of Iowa State College says town farmers could profit by expanding hog production in 1953. With ample feed and equipment for early pigs, producers should breed for early farrowings. He notes that pigs reaching market weight in July or August fetched higher prices, a trend seen in most years. Planning a July or August market requires sows to farrow early.

A recipe for a light spice cake with caramel cream cheese frosting. Ingredients include cake flour sugar molasses oil eggs water orange rind juice and spices. The batter is folded, baked in a tube pan, inverted to cool, then trimmed. Frosting combines cream cheese caramel syrup and sugar.
Breeding Schedule and Gilt Development Advice for Iowa Hog Farmers
Quaife advises sorting gilts now or earlier, aiming for eight to nine months age with 200 pounds or more, favoring pasture access and oat based rations. Well developed gilts yield larger litters and better litter care than younger, less mature sows. Iowa producers with good feed can expand the 1953 hog crop based on pasture and corn prospects following 1952 feed shortages.
