The Magi were hereditary Pere sian priests serving as keepers of sacred things educators of youth and advisers to rulers. Reorganized by Zoroaster about 550 B C they restored simplicity and severity but declined under Sassanian rule becoming wandering fortune tellers. The term later labeled astrologers in the East and the Wise Men at Bethlehem sought the Infant Jesus.
