Health of Colts Should Be Maintained At Birth
J B Coffey of the Ohio State University Animal Husbandry Department says navle disease in colts can be prevented by clean sanitary stalls for mares and foals and a disinfected stable. Use clean new straw and keep iodine ready to bathe the navel cord. Do not milk the mare before or after foaling to allow colostrum, a natural laxative, to aid the newborn. After a few days both mare and foal can exercise in the pasture lot.
