Winter fish kill expected in shallow North Iowa lakes

North Iowa conservation officials warn a serious winter kill is likely in many shallow lakes though losses in major fishing waters may be near normal. The cause is dissolved oxygen shortage under heavy snow cover that blocks light for oxygen plants and accelerates fish suffocation. No proven method exists to replenish oxygen in these shallow waters. Technicians report ongoing oxygen tests and anticipate uneven losses across lakes.
