Pocahon Karnhamville Havelock John nny Palmer Somers Lau ri feature in a gala event highlighting school choirs glee clubs and soloists. The program includes classes C B and A with mixed choruses girls and boys groups, piano and instrumental solos, and a string and woodwind ensemble.
Mrs. W. A. Spence died of cerebral hemorrhage while en route to a Fort Dodge hospital after assisting at a Pocahontas club event. She had been in ill health for years. A funeral service was held at St. Margaret's church Sunday at 10 o clock, with a full obituary to follow in this issue.
Howard Stillman, 20 year old Palo Alto county farm youth, was accidentally shot Monday on the Stillman farm. The rifle was in the hands of his brother Charles Stillman Jr as the two tried to butcher a cow. The bullet lodged in the abdomen but doctors say the wound is not expected to be serious.
Members of the H Club organize a tree gathering at a farm to collect saplings. Efforts focus on ordering and transporting the youth group’s saplings, with wrapping and digging tasks noted during the activity.

Roosevelt district No. 2 pupils led by Miss Anita Miller will stage a program Monday evening March 27 at the school house eight o clock. A small admission will be charged and lunch served afterward. The event showcases readings songs dances and a play The 100000 Club Paper with listed cast and acts. The school sits half a mile south and four miles west of town.
The engagement of Miss Velma Gygi to Norton C Ives was announced at Freeman Hall Ames on a Saturday evening March 1. About thirty friends attended including Miss Severance the dietician and Mrs MacDonald the hall director. Decorations featured the college colors cardinal and gold.
Robert Thompson 86 admitted forging three checks totaling 45 dollars and cashing them at Pocahontas Stores using another man’s name. He was sentenced to up to ten years in Fort Madison penitentiary after arrest in Emmetsburg following a countywide lookout.
Hronek's hall Pocahontas will host an R E A electric cooking demonstration on Wednesday March 29 sponsored by the Pocahontas County Rural Electric Cooperative. Miss Wilson will demonstrate ranges and Mr Clark will discuss installation and operation costs. Township demonstrations show metered electricity use for family meals with a limited time discount offer on ranges. Mr and Mrs Clarence Srouse and Mr and Mrs Harry Kinsley visited Mrs Emmet Meech.
Local fans followed the state tournament as Creston High emerged as champions after defeats of Diagonal, Mason City, Marshalltown and Sac City. Final standings listed Creston first, Diagonal second, Marshalltown third and Mason City fourth.
The Des Moines township girls 4 H club met at the Reckard home with nine members present. Shirley Fisher was chosen delegate to the pasture school in Primghar. Charlene Hron ek Wilda Kilbourne and Margery Joens planned the year’s program. Next meeting set for Shirley Tisher’s home on April 15.
A fire believed caused by defective wiring destroyed the large house on the Fred Hawley farm four miles south and three fourths mile east of Laurens on Saturday. The home valued at over $7,000 was insured and Seymore Hawley and family resided on the farm. Neighbors saved furniture from the first floor and some upstairs items.
Firefighters battled a Saturday blaze in Mrs. Moore's west side building, starting behind the U. K. barber shop. The Wolfe shoe repair shop suffered damage, with Wolfe relocating gear temporarily. Insurance details noted. adjusters due midweek to determine future plans.
The Up and Coming 4 H Club met March 18, 1939, at the home of Lila and Marion Daniels with fifteen members, two leaders and one visitor present. President Mildred Oberding led talks on street conduct and dental care. other members spoke and reports on the leaders training school at Pocahontas were given. A delicious lunch was served.
One hundred Iowa State College seniors earned bachelor of science degrees at the winter quarter commencement in Memorial Union Ames. Graduates include 38 in agriculture 86 in engineering 18 in home economics and 8 in science. Norton Conrad Ives Rolfe received master’s degrees.
The Ladies Missionary Society of the Presbyterian church met at Mrs. LeRoy Nelson's home for the first meeting of the year. Mrs. C. E. Boyce, president, conducted dedication of newly elected officers with prayers by Dr. Sning. About thirty ladies attended and a lunch followed.
Spring arrived Tuesday morning as temperatures rose from a cold spell to above normal levels, reaching up to 75 on some days. Ice and snow melted while the ground dried, signaling farm work to begin next week if the warm dry weather continues.
The Garfield Go-Getters met at Ada Marie George's home with nine members present. Melba Ader led a conservation talk on planting flowers and shrubs, Mary Isabelle Chambers spoke on street etiquette, and Beryl White demonstrated making a clothes basket from a bushel basket. Marjorie and Bernice Guderian resigned. new officers were Mary Margaret Brinkman president, Beryl White vice president, Lorene George secretary treasurer, and Beverly DeWolf reporter. A lunch followed.
The Rolfe high basketball team earned a state tournament berth after a strong season. Coach A D Evans and Lawrence Kennedy arranged transportation and meals funded by student activities. Team captains are Richard Cox and James Taylor. A tentative baseball schedule lists games at Laurens and Pocahontas with a county tournament on April 28 and a May 11 home game against Pocahontas.
Garfield township Farm Bureau meeting will be at the H D Brinkman home Friday evening March 24 beginning at 8 o'clock. Entertainment includes Miss Maasdam teacher from Garfield school district No 1 and a mixed quartet from D M T school. Mrs H F Olerich and Nis Behrendsen speak on Pocahontas county history. Supt John Davis of Story City discusses rural rehabilitation. Dr H A Sinning's Sunday school class held a potluck dinner at the Sinning home Tuesday evening with hosts listed.
The Laurens high school debate teams, Northwest district champions, will travel to the state meet next week. Laurens teams contend both sides on the topic Resolved that the United States should form an alliance with Great Britain. The event features devotional, music, and a light lunch by Epworth League at the Methodist church parish hall.
Pocahontas county farmers are expected to high participation in the 1939 program with 95 percent likely to participate. County chairman Harry L. Lund says 1435 of 1500 contacted have signaled intent. sign-ups are ongoing and urged for those not yet signed to consult their local AAA committeeman and plan farming under the map and allotments.
Rickard hardware and radio has moved into the former George O. Hauck & Co. store. The interior has been redecorated and presents a fine location for the hardware and radio shop. The building was sold by the Hauck estate to Mr. Rickard several weeks ago.
The DMT Woman's Club met at the schoolhouse on a Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Mae Caffray spoke on Europe with a travel talk and display of dolls. A radio health skit by the first and second grades and violin selections by Miss Neal followed. Short business ensued.
The American Home? Study club met Friday afternoon at Mrs J C Hosier home with Mrs Arthur Vaughn as program chair. The evening included entertainment on meals in the home safety in the home and silver and china. Twenty five ladies attended including two guests Mrs Le Weil Ives and Mrs Carmi Vaughn. Lunch was served by the hostesses.
