T S Clark Elected to Rolfe Consolidated School Board

Voters chose Dr. T S Clark for the Rolfe Consolidated School District No 1 board seat with 114 ballots. Other candidates included R B Ranney 178 votes and W Webb 105, with Wiegert elected treasurer 188 to 0. County election totals show 243 votes cast district wide and 116 for Mrs P Brinkman and 112 for Melvin Thorson in the Rolfe district.

Davidson Named County Chairman In Cancer Drive

B Hook of Mason City announced 99 chairmen in 99 counties to lead the April 1948 fund raising campaign for the American Cancer Society. J L Davidson of Rolfe named airman for Pocahontas county and urged nationwide education and service to cut cancer deaths by encouraging early doctor visits. The national goal is 16 042 000, up from 12 000 000, with Elmer H Rohst as national chairman and Iowa set to raise 272 320 this year.

Buckwalter to Speak at Rolfe Banquet Tonight

A mother-daughter banquet at Rolfe Methodist church Friday evening March 12 at 6 80 features Mrs. C I Buckwalter of Humboldt as speaker. Proceeds will be used by the church.

Bixler Wins First in Pre-district Iowa Speech Contest

Mary Lou Bixler took first in humorous at the pre district contest in Humboldt on March 8 with Fate of Melpomenus Jones. Dorothy Iverson also earned first rating in the same class. Judges were Prof. George Reynolds Mrs Keuhl and A LeFoy from Buena Vista college. Winners advance to Ida Grove district contest, with finals in Boone in April.

Club Luncheon Held on Monday in Rolfe

The Greater Rolfe club held its bi weekly luncheon last Monday at the lounge. P Lomen acted as chairman. The Nain Lutheran Aid ladies served the luncheon. Mr and Mrs Fred Smith were welcomed back to Rolfe business. Dr L R Feldman moved to request town council publish proceedings in The Rolfe Arrow.

Pheasant Count Starts March 22 Across State

Conservation officers begin the annual spring pheasant census on March 22, surveying populations and sex ratios in north central and south sections of each county. Daily checks run about 1 hour 45 minutes before sunrise through April 10, using slow drive sampling to count birds observed.

Lutherans Unite in Rolfe To Form One Congregation

At a Tuesday meeting Trinity Lutheran members voted 67 to 5 to unite with Nain Lutheran to form a single congregation. The plan had already won a large majority at the main church meeting. A new church building is planned once funds and favorable conditions allow.

Obituary: Daniel Sease 1855 1948

Daniel Sease died March 2 near Scranton at age 93. Born January 8, 1855 in Henry county Illinois, he married Lettie Mae Goodyear in 1888 and had seven daughters and five sons. Survived by numerous children and a sister, with his wife predeceasing him in 1981.

Soils Commissioner Election Planned in Pocahontas County

The Pocahontas county soils district holds a Friday election at the public school in Pocahontas to fill a six year term on the soil conservation service committee. Nominated are O T Hinrichs of Gilmore City and Elmer A Peterson of Fondul. Tom Kelly, ex service member, will speak on soil conservation. ballot box opens at 7 30 with doughnuts and coffee served after the program.

Pocahontas County 4-H Plans Growth During National Week

Extension Director Dale Goodell outlines aims for 1948 Pocahontas County 4-H with 470 members up from 380 in 1947 and a goal to gain 30 by April 1. Projects include livestock crops clothing and expanded camps tours and rallies backed by 50 volunteer leaders.

AAA Meeting In Po­ca­hontas Chooses Conservation Practices

A county meeting in Pocahontas Friday March 5 instructed AAA township committeemen on aiding farmers in choosing 1948 conservation practices. Four practices were adopted weed control liming materials fertilizers and green manure crops. Farm worksheets must be signed by March 31 with meetings at the Rolfe lounge March 10 and 11 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Town State Band Tour Opens In Ames March 8

Alvin Riches son of P J Riches Rolfe is among 90 Town State college students on the 1948 spring concert tour. The band started March 8 at Ames high school and will play Webster City next Monday with stops in Atlantic Council Bluffs Shenandoah Creston Des Moines and Indianola Pella Newton. Prof Alvin R Edgar directs the group and Harriet Porter remains the tour soloist.

Weed Control Meeting For Pocahontas County Farmers

Pocahontas county farmers commercial sprayers and others interested in weed control may learn modern methods at the county weed meeting in Pocahontas on March 12. The event at the courthouse begins 8 p.m. with I P Sylvester the principal speaker demonstrating spray equipment and latest chemicals. A 7 p.m. Legion hall potluck is planned for March 15 for American Legion and Auxiliary members and families.

Plover American Legion Wins Independent Basketball Tourney

The Plover American Legion team defeated Rolfe 72-60 in the final at Plover high school gym. Harry Murray led Rolfe with 29 points while Phayne Heathman scored 25 for Plover. Consolation winner Mallard beat Webb 58-39. Regular rounds saw Plover beat West Bend 58-36 and Rolfe beat Ottosen 48-40.

Byron Hunt will operate a radio repair shop in the building west of Miller's Place starting Monday March 15. Johnnie Loss will join as refrigeration repair expert. Both bring experience from F II Rickard & Sons with prior work in radio repair and electric wiring. Loss came from Algona in 1946 to operate a roller skating tink.
