Iowa employment reports show May payroll and hiring gains
Town employers added 9 108 workers in May as favorable weather spurred industrial and farm hiring. State employment service logged over 10 000 new work applicants, a near record for May. Graduates and students formed the bulk of a 37 percent rise in new applications over April. Farm openings rose 5 percent and farm placements 10 percent, though farm placements were 8 percent below April and 35 percent below May last year. Unemployment claims held steady from April and were over 40 percent higher than May last year. Non farm placements totaled 7 965 with wholesale and retail trade leading at 1 965, manufacturing 1 860, and domestic service 1 310.

Farm incomes fall 11 percent, cash grain farms fare better amid weak livestock prices. Real estate taxes up 6 percent. since 1940 expenses have climbed 232 percent as machinery and inputs rise. A 2 percent federal gasoline tax rebate is seen as immediate aid.
