Death Toll Skews Male in Iowa 1955 Vital Stats Report

Iowa Vital Statistics records show more male births and deaths than female, with 1955 leading causes heart disease cancer vascular lesions and accidents causing far more male fatalities. Among ages 15 to 29 accidents remain the biggest killer for men.

Iowa employment reports show May payroll and hiring gains

Town employers added 9 108 workers in May as favorable weather spurred industrial and farm hiring. State employment service logged over 10 000 new work applicants, a near record for May. Graduates and students formed the bulk of a 37 percent rise in new applications over April. Farm openings rose 5 percent and farm placements 10 percent, though farm placements were 8 percent below April and 35 percent below May last year. Unemployment claims held steady from April and were over 40 percent higher than May last year. Non farm placements totaled 7 965 with wholesale and retail trade leading at 1 965, manufacturing 1 860, and domestic service 1 310.

May saw 2489042 in unemployment insurance benefits paid, down 25 percent from April but higher than the $406,000 paid a year earlier. The average weekly benefit for May was $22.92, with farm placements totaling 1143 and drinking establishments numbered at 926.

Farm production costs rise 1 percent in 155 says Iowa expert

Steve Hiemstra from Iowa State College notes farm production costs in 1955 up 1 percent from 1954 with feed exvires down 8 percent helping limit total costs. Farm incomes fall 11 percent, cash grain farms fare better amid weak livestock prices. Real estate taxes up 6 percent. since 1940 expenses have climbed 232 percent as machinery and inputs rise. A 2 percent federal gasoline tax rebate is seen as immediate aid.
