Diederich Named to 1951 Hawkeye Girls State

Marilyn Diederich daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Diederich has been chosen to attend the 1951 Hawkeye Girls State. Mr and Mrs Harris Hughes hosted a family dinner honoring their daughter Susann and Margie Hughes on their birthdays. Jim Anderson arrived May 25 for a visit at the Higgins home and left June 7 for Alaska where he will be stationed. his wife and new son will accompany him.

Lena Vaughn wins at Ames Berkshire judging contest

Thirty years ago on June 19 1941 Mrs Lena Vaughn captured 1st overall in purebred Berkshire judging at Ames during the Berkshire Breeders Convention. Alvin Freel, George Zeman, and Clarence Bendixon were ill with pneumonia and jaundice and under doctor care. Red Cross sewing was performed by six women. University of Iowa president Virgil M Hancher received an honorary LLD from Grinnell College, the first award for the new university leader.
