Skimping food of colt is expensive
J S Montgomery of the Minnesota College of Agriculture urges ample early care for foals. He advises cool stables for rested foals, early weaning from the mare, frequent suckling times, and feeding crushed oats and bran with alfalfa hay. Summer ration should include pasture grass with some grain, plus ample water and salt. Proper hoof trimming and balanced growth prevent long term lameness.

Favor blue grass for feeding swine
Dean F B Mumford notes that blue grass pasture can profitably feed hogs. From 1908 to 1912 Missouri experiment station data show $26 value per acre at eight cents per pound live hog weight. Blue grass needs grain supplementation and is less valuable July 15 to August 30, so alternate pastures are advised then. Use a grain mix of corn and linseed meal or corn and tankage and feed to gain about 0.75 lb per day per 100 lb live weight.
