Civil War Letters Describe Hard Tack

The notes from Camp Benton in 1861 and Helena, Arkansas in 1868 describe water shortages, deception by rebels, and soldiers’ daily routines, with a doodled hard tack image explaining sailors’ “pilot bread.”
