A Ruthven fire Tuesday destroyed the elevator and 5500 bushels of grain owned by George A. French. The blaze started atop the structure, with the office and nearby homes spared by firemen. Nearby oil tanks caused concern until flames were controlled. little insurance covered the building and contents. rebuild plans remain uncertain.
Judge M. Hutchinson of Rockwell City ordered Mrs. Joe Swanson Farnhamville to the state hospital for criminal insane at Anamosa after she confessed to shooting and killing her husband. Sheriff Dillinger took her to Anamosa on Thursday afternoon as attorneys entered a plea of not guilty to first degree murder and a sanity trial was ordered. Swanson was shot as he lay in bed two weeks earlier on Sunday morning. The couple have two children.
Barbers and cosmetologists from Cherokee Ida Buena Vista Pocahontas counties plan a picnic at Storm Lake State Park on Sunday Aug 3. A full sports program includes kittenball games and children and adult dash races. John McGruder of Des Moines may speak. lunches are family supplied with ice cream and drinks provided at the grounds.
Sunday afternoon collision on the pavement west of Whittemore between a car driven by Nick Muerer of Plover and another driven by John Drew of Emmetsburg left both vehicles ditched. Sylvia Drew was thrown through a windshield with severe arm lacerations. Nick Muerer and his parents J. T. Muerer and Mrs. Muerer were injured. All were taken to Algona hospital for surgery.
The town announced that by July 15 it had completed more than half of its 1000 mile paving plan for the year. Sixty crews finished 108 miles in the first half of July, and state engineer Fred R. White predicted the month would surpass June’s record of 211 miles. Up to July 1 White provided the update.
The article notes 585.78 miles of new paving finished since April and 2,371 miles already in Wo. Mr. Whits predicts nearly 3,400 miles available to motorists by November 4, when construction will pause for winter.
