Controlling Canada Thistles With Mowing and Alfalfa Seeding

Farmers should cut thistles with a mower and spray remaining plants with sodium chlorate. Rough treatment plus dry weather may kill them, while immediate cutting reduces the plant’s winter food reserves. In patches, cultivate lightly to destroy thistles and reseed with 20 to 25 pounds of alfalfa per acre, as alfalfa smothers better than sorghum or Sudan grass. Forest records note trees struck by lightning up to seven or eight times.
