Storm Lake Seining Removes Massive Rough Fish Catch
State Conservation Commission crews harvested over 35,000 pounds of carp and buffalo from Storm Lake in a single under ice seine haul. The net stretched more than two thirds of a mile. Fisheries biologists count and mark fish to study populations while rough fish are sold after a harmless fin clipping. Local sportsmen noted large walleyes and channel cats among many species. The program aims to free space and food for desirable game fish, with five pounds of rough fish food needed to grow one pound of game fish. Superintendent E B Speaker says operations will continue indefinitely as officials film the activity for a department motion picture.
