C A Grant of Rolfe owned the first automobile a Cadillac single cylinder ten horsepower bought in Des Moines around 1903 to 1904. He registered it in Des Moines for 2 dollars and received license number 520, the 520th car in the state. The car lacked doors and had right-hand steering, with rear entry through a split tonneau. Roads were wagon tracks, speeds rarely surpassing fifteen mph, and drivers clashed with horse teams over road space.
