Christmases of Pesteryear
In early December the older children read the calendar for good travel days to town to ship geese and shop. The family packs the surrey with gifts, buys a little blue bird for a penny, and hides gifts until December 24th. On the 24th they prepare meals, bake, and decorate with a plum tree cut from Elsa and Paul’s planting, then fill stockings and share gifts among all, including a box from a sister in Wisconsin.
