Rolfe Junior High Students Excel In Spelling and Basketball

Sixth graders Joyce Peterson Dorothy Biederman and Herschel Chapman won the spelling elimination and will compete to reach the county contest. The Rolfe team defeated Havelock 27 to 15 with Arnold Sandving scoring 13 points in a well played game. A pep meeting featured a skit by Charlie McCarthy and Edgar Bergen.

Plover Boy George Wilson Describes Pacific Navy Disaster

George Wilson, signalman on the U S S Pennsylvania, writes of a plane crash in the Pacific near San Francisco. Of fourteen men aboard the planes only three survived as the disaster unfolded in view from his ship. His parents, Mr and Mrs W L Wilson, received the vivid letter last week.

Prover Presbyterian Church announces a Willing Workers meeting this Thursday at 2 30 p m in the church social room with a picnic lunch. Members should bring sandwiches and a covered dish. Shaw Rites Mark Beloved Plover Leader’s Death at 60

George Shaw born December 4 1877 in Iowa died February 5 1938 in St. Louis while visiting family at age 60. He lived in Plover most of his life attending Drake University and marrying Alma Rutledge in Des Moines. He headed in hardware in Plover then focused on insurance serving as vice president of State Reinsurance Co Grinnell and director at Allied Mutual Insurance Des Moines. He leaves wife two daughters Doroth and Mrs Donald McFarland Minneapolis and Prentice W Des Moines plus siblings and four grandchildren. Funeral drew hundreds with Rev. Redmayne officiating and a large local turnout. Burial in Powhatan cemetery.
