Tests at College Show Small Grain Is Scabby
Iowa State College seed laboratory headed by Dr. R H Porter reports heavy scab in wheat and barley with oats and rye affected less. Barley samples reach up to 100 percent infection. some wheat samples also 100 percent. Scabby seed yields low weight and poor germination and can cause vomiting in hogs. Fanning removes light kernels and treating remaining seed with New Improved Ceresan at one and a half ounces per bushel improves vigor and reduces smut and root diseases. seed treatment does not prevent scab on heads in the growing season. Barley seed quality is poorer this year. farmers should treat seed and sow heavier for a good stand.

Sheets To Fit Beds And Households In Variety of Sizes
Hazel MehKibben from the Home Economics Education Department at Iowa State College offers guidance on selecting sheets for standard beds. She advises 108 inch long sheets with widths 64 72 or 82 inches for single three quarter double beds respectively. She recommends torn edge sheets to avoid crookedness after laundering and a strong selvage as the weak point. A good weight sheet should be sturdy not sleezy and not heavily starched with many threads per square inch.
