Livestock Profits Tied to High Crop Yields in Iowa
W H Stevenson of Iowa State College argues profitable livestock farms depend on cheap seed and high crop yields. Extension data from 127 farms in Butler Franklin Hardin Grundy show high profit farms average 54 bushels of corn per acre versus 42 on low profit farms and 45 bushels of oats versus 37. Higher yields raise feed value to about 28.84 dollars per acre versus 19.88, accounting for roughly 1150 dollars in profit difference. He cites the Iowa System of Soil Management to lift yields via drainage cultivation manuring liming phosphates and crop rotation.
