Signals to Mars Would Face Harsh Limits and Distortions
Henry Meter of Center College spoke at a Kentucky Academy of Science meeting about the challenges of contacting Mars. He cited frigid, thin Martian air, no water, light signaling loss, and the Earth’s atmosphere absorbing 40 percent of light. He noted that a ten mile square Earth light would appear only one inch square from Mars and that radio signals would require a million amperes to reach one ampere on Mars, with solar output likely overpowering Earth transmissions.
