Slaughter Cattle Decline Signals Beef Supply Shift

The final quarter of 1974 shows a sharp drop in cattle on feed in 23 major states to 9.6 million head, down 25 percent from 1973. New feedlot placements fell 20 percent, yet beef supply stays ample due to higher slaughter of non-fed cattle and a 12 percent rise in overall cattle slaughter. Prices may rise slowly this winter with choice steer prices forecast at 38 to 40 dollars, tempered by weaker demand and larger beef supplies.
