The postwar auto sector highlights strong efficiency with 11.88 million vehicles produced since October 1945 despite strikes and shortages. It shipped 3.34 million trucks and buses and 8.55 million passenger cars, kept replacement parts at triple prewar rates, and limited major model changes to stay cost competitive.
The American and British plan to return Ruhr coal and steel to German control faces strong French and other allied opposition. International control would give neighbors a voice and have the industry serve all Europe, not Germany alone, amid Marshall Plan gains. Also, New York grand jury moves against the House Un American Activities Committee as it probes Communist spies.
