Red Cross Drive Surpasses County Quotas Across Townships
In Plover and Powhatan townships the Red Cross annual roll call exceeded expectations with Plover achieving 100 percent of its 56 member quota and Powhatan reaching 18 members from a smaller target. Roosevelt township produced eight memberships from two canvassed schools while county reports praised volunteers for sewing and other aid. The Pocahontas county meeting reviewed drive results and noted the operetta Oh Doctor performed by local glee clubs drew a large audience. Rodman basketball beat Plover teams in two games as girls lost 25 to 35 and boys 29 to 36. A special Powhatan Red Cross meeting is set for December 16 at the Plover schoolhouse with officer elections looming.

Airplane Safer The Evolution Of Travel In One Life
A. L. Roberts of Mallard writes from the Arrow recounting a lifetime from 1870 Des Moines to a 1941 Mason City plane ride. He recalls a stage coach crossing a ford over a single Des Moines bridge to farm life, contrasting it with flying at 1200 feet and 125 mph showing travel safety gains.

Bullet wounds hunter in Iowa pheasant hunt near Madrid
A Des Moines man was wounded by a single bullet while pheasant hunting near Madrid. The bullet pierced the thigh and calf, exiting near the knee, not striking bone. The path suggests the bullet served as it traveled through leg tissue.
