Pocahontas County Fair Results and Local News

The Pocahontas County 4 H Fair held Wednesday afternoon August 21 featured Frank Hanisch of Rolfe as the H Pair horseshoe tournament winner. Telmer Sime captured the Pocahontas County Golf title with 77 for 18 holes. Mrs. R B Ranney received her U S citizenship papers in Fort Dodge on August 21 after wartime delays. Lawrence Bishop began work at the Rolfe Arrow printing shop replacing his brother Lester.

Oldest Pocahontas house to be replaced for post office

The Albert J. Shaw home, possibly the community’s oldest standing house dating to the 1870s, sits on Court Square near the Pocahontas Hotel and will be razed for a new post office building. Construction is set to begin soon with completion targeted for February. Funeral services were held Wednesday for Frank W. Bartosh at SS Peter and Paul’s Church in Fort Dodge.

Powell wins 1966 Fonda Open golf title by six under par

Bill Powell led the 1966 Fonda Open with rounds of 88 88 34 for 6 under par across 27 holes to win the championship. Ron Cougenour was runner up with 87 88 34 for 104 and won medalist honors after a four way playoff involving Jerry Hansen Bruce Burchfield Steve Hetzel. Emmetsburg blanked Gilmore City 8 0 to win the Plover Invitational Softball Tourney on the Havelock field with Cherokee taking third in consolation by Grattnger 4 3.
