Religion's Part in Big War Senior Chaplain
Dr Henry Russel Talbot argues that about ninety percent of fallen soldiers carried a Bible prayer book cross or crucifix, proving religion was a real element in the minds of American soldiers in 1917 18. He, as senior chaplain of the First Division, studied items found with the dead and claims religion was present though often timid in practice. He asserts the average American soldier was not irreligious but needed cultivation and intelligent use of faith.
