Consolidated with The Reveille on February 12 1914 the paper traces roots to 1888 founded by J J Bruce and later run by the J H Lighter family It was entered as second class matter May 14 1910 at Rolfe Iowa post office under the act of March 3 1879.
The Soviet press outlines aims as Soviet armies approach Germany. They favor punishment for Nazi crimes but oppose mass murder. They plan occupation and forced reconstruction of cities while avoiding a communist revolution. They seek long term peace and protection of Soviet interests without establishing hostile governments nearby.
The Army deploys 8,000 troops to Philadelphia to end an unauthorized streetcar strike that halted wartime transit for workers. General Hayes orders four leaders arrested or workers to return or lose job availability certificates. 18 to 27 year olds risk draft deferments. Cars resume after guards stabilize the scene. A grand jury probes leaders to see if they backed a company union to undermine the CIO.

The Greater Rolfe club met at noon in Crystal Cafe room with 48 members. N A Jim Wilson chaired. Shirley Thornton spoke on club purposes. Fund appeal from Pocahontas old settlers discussed for a county courthouse marker. 84 members now listed. plans for service men bulletin board and a women’s lounge considered.
Russell Lundy of Des Moines, who judged the 1942 4-H fair horse show, will judge the 1944 event. He trains horses and developed Silver Service, a multiple class winner at the American Royal for five years. Lundy has run large horse ranches and kept up to 75 registered American Saddle Bred horses. The horse show is set for Thursday evening, August 24, at the 4-H Fair.
Plans call for a 2 p.m. Thursday August 24 preliminary round with finals at 1 p.m. Friday August 25. Contest entrants should contact Roy Johnson, chairman of the committee, for entry details at Pocahontas.
Pocahontas county Historical Society hosts the Old Settlers annual picnic on courthouse lawn August 24 with coffee and cream at noon, music at 1:30 led by Mrs. A J Shaw, speeches by F C Gilchrist,A J Shaw,Mack A Lynch, Charles Smith, Frank Hronek, Fred Hawley, and Jim Collins performing Breakfast At Sardis. Prizes will be awarded for oldest man and woman and longest-married couple. contestants must live in Pocahontas county.
The playground will be west of the club building under Miss Margaret Turner Pocahontas supervision. It offers a sand pile toys and books for children while parents explore the fair.
Pocahontas Rendering Works through agent Clark Schill offered 10 bags of Pocahontas Hog Supplement as prizes to 4-H fair swine exhibitors last week. Two additional details follow in the text.
Bags will be awarded to the exhibitor of the first place market litter. One bag will go to the second place litter and one to the third place litter. An additional bag of supplements will be awarded to the winning purebred in each breed.
Entries for the 1944 horse show at the 4 H fair must be submitted to the Farm Bureau office by Monday noon August 21. Old time fiddlers contest entries should be mailed to Eleanor Flaherty in Pocahontas before the contest starts Friday noon August 25. Entry blanks are in the back cover of the 1944 fair premium book.
Pocahontas county 4-H boys prepare for the 1944 fair with entry day set for August 23 and judging to start that evening in the big tent. About 395 head are expected including 70 beef, 160 market pigs, 120 purebred pigs, 80 sheep and 15 dairy heifers. Swine judging at 9:00 am Thursday, baby beef at 1:00 pm Thursday, and the 4-H livestock auction on Friday at 4:00 pm.
Billy Reese of Indianola donated a book to aid service men in Long Beach California. He asked readers to send him a note so he could track its journey. A marine on a South Pacific island about 8000 miles away replied with a letter.
Mae E. Hartman files a petition in equity in Pocahontas County District Court alleging she is legally married to Lew J. Hartman and that he deserted her for over two years. petition seeks relief in the court.
The petition requests a decree of absolute divorce for the plaintiff and a settlement granting the homestead to the plaintiff. The description covers Lot Nine in Outlot Five News Pocahontas County with a 60 ft east, 140 ft south, 60 ft west, 140 ft north boundary. The notice warns appearance is required by September 6, 1944 or default will be entered. Attorney for plaintiff is Be. Van Alsti.
