Evergreen Shelterbelt Advice From Iowa Extension Forester
Iowa State College extension forester Guy R. Ramsey recommends planting only evergreen trees for shelterbelts to protect against winter wind and cold. He notes deciduous trees like Chinese elm shed leaves in winter and offer little wind protection unless grown in extensive blocks. Ramsey cites Douglas Fir, Western Yellow Pine, Austrian Pine, Blue Spruce, or White Space as reliable options that reach adequate wind protection after 10 to 12 growing seasons.
