Insulation of Ceilings Prevents Heat Loss

Agricultural engineer C H Van Vlack of Iowa State College urges ceiling insulation as the most cost effective heat saver for farm homes. He notes warm air rises and that attic insulation should be placed either between roof rafters or attic floor joists depending on whether the attic is heated. Farmers can often install the material themselves and more advice is available from Iowa State Extension Service bulletin 1698 Heating the Farm Home.
