Soil Treatment Boosts Grass Crops and Hay Quality
Professor C. J. Chapman of the University of Wisconsin reports that ammonium nitrate applied as a top dress of 150 to 200 pounds per acre in April or May increases timothy and other grasses yields by 4 to 11 percent and improves hay protein and feeding value. Demonstration trials in 1945 and 1946 across multiple Wisconsin counties show higher yields at a cost of about $4.25 per acre. Continuous use of straight nitrogen can deplete lime, phosphorus, and potash, so blends like 0-20-10, 0-20-20, 3-18-9, 3-12-12, or 4-12-8 up to 350 pounds per acre are recommended, with lime and manure to replenish minerals.

Fly Control Drive Aims to Eradicate Flies in Town
Entomologists warn that a single pair of flies starting in April could yield an astronomical number of offspring by August. The plan promotes cleaning fly breeding places early and spraying with DDT, with 4 H clubs in Pocahontas County already doing demonstrations. Harold Gunderson, state entomologist, says rural and urban areas could nearly eradicate flies with sustained cleanup and DDT use.
