Record cattle slaughter climbs to historic February high
Pocahontas County Extension Director notes February federal inspected slaughter rises to a record, with ISU economist Francis Kutish projecting 34 million head for the year, up from 28 million last year. January 1 cattle total at 94 million, trend toward 100 million by 1956 unless weather or prices blunt demand.

Cattle Prices Seen Softening As Year Advances
Kutish warns of lower cattle prices over the next two years after a partial rebound from February lows. He notes more fed heifers this year and a larger supply of finished cattle, with price drops expected for high choice and prime cattle later in spring. Corn supply plans include resealing corn and crib space prep for new crop. Farmers are advised to dispose of surplus corn or secure cribbing soon as prices may fall.

Cow Kicks Gate as Johnson Suffers Facial Injuries
Tom Johnson of near Anita was kicked by a cow resulting in a broken nose, loose front teeth, and gashes on the upper lip and nose. He required 12 stitches after the incident occurred on Friday the 13th.
