In Dubuque on October 4 a number of landowners lack patents to their parcels and thus titles. Washington advised no original patents exist for town lots. Des Moines land office will issue patents on surrender of duplicates. If duplicates were lost, owners must file affidavits per tract entry to obtain patents.
In Des Moines over 800 children of school age in business districts, 215 are out of school violating the compulsory education law. New truancy officer J. C. Byram will notify these children and their parents within thirty days, with possible court action to test the statute.
Charles Holada testified that Mrs Gallaugher plotted with him to kill her husband after their unlawful relationship began. Plans included cyanide poisoning, an ax ambush, barn assault, throwing him to horses, or a hunting accident. Holada admitted fleeing justice under an assumed name and denied pressuring Gallaugher, while she denied meeting him that day. Local observers fear Gallaugher may escape while Holada’s admissions doom him.
Iowa City October 6 Ella Gallaugher and Charles Holada faced a long murder trial over the death of James Gallaugher. Defense attorney Holbert argued the defendant was innocent, portraying her as virtuous while challenging the prosecutor’s portrayal of the case as Iowa vs Gallaugher. The jury delivered a not guilty verdict.
Fort Dodge reports that the Des Moines river viaduct, a major link in the Great Western extension to Omaha, will start steel erection next week with a goal of completion in ninety days. Over a third of the steel is already on site, delays due to mis-shipped parts have been remedied, and engineers expect rapid progress thereafter.
Mrs Mollie Hunt received one year in the Anamosa penitentiary after an agreement between her attorney and the county attorney. She shot A H Goodspeed in Atlantic last July in a jealous revenge bid, striking three times and wounding him. She previously attempted suicide following arrest. Goodspeed is a widower. Hunt is divorced with four grown children.
Council Bluffs faces a potential record tax levy as Portland Gold Mining may owe about 31 million dollars in back taxes. If assessed on a nine million dollar stock valuation, yearly taxes could reach 191 thousand, totaling about 955 thousand for five years, a windfall that would nearly erase county debt and fund city obligations.
The Andy Looney saloon in the stock yards district was robbed in broad daylight around noon. About $1,000 in checks and cash were taken after thieves sawed a hole through the wall and used a Elk's fair banner to conceal the drawer. Porter Philip Zitek is held for investigation.
J W Johnson a young farmer near Albia was killed by Marshal Thomas Smith on Saturday night after resisting arrest amid a brief struggle. Johnson’s death occurred when a shot to the heart ended the confrontation. Also reported: Orville Saylor Sioux City left half injured in a high school game with Onawa, serious and potentially fatal.

Mrs John Wy Gear widow of the late Senator Gear died Saturday night after a lingering illness in Burlington. She was born in Middlebury Vermont where she lived until moving to Burlington. She married John H Gear in December 1882.
The state executive council voted to buy Senator James Harlan's portrait for up to 1000 dollars, with the last general assembly authorizing the purchase. Judge B P Birdsall and George Wright visited Des Moines to discuss Third district campaign plans with Governor Cummins and State Chairman Spence. Eleven institutions were accredited for teacher training under a new law, with several more schools under inspection, while Iowa seeks $2500 from John J Thornton, an insane patient at Independence Hospital, to settle public debts. The state treasury balance stood at about 1.056 million dollars in general revenue, with total on hand and investments near 1.799 million.
