Mission conference draws hundreds to local church

Four day mission conference to start at Bergen church with sessions daily forenoon, afternoon, and evening. Leaders include Rev. Wm Trygstad Madagascar Dr Johannes Astrup South Africa and Dr C W Landghi China along with other missionaries and pastors. Local ladies aid serve meals, lodging arranged, with dinners priced 35 and 25 cents and 25 cents for evening lunches.

1930 Drouth Declared Most Severe on Record

The Department of Agriculture released a table through August 29 declaring the 1930 drought the most severe on record in length, area, and precipitation deficit. It notes prior extreme dry periods in 1881, 1894, 1901, 1911, 1916, and 1924 and reports dry sloughs ponds and lakes across drouth states with water bodies at multiyear lows.

Marshalltown Truck Driver Hurt By Sheet Iron Accident

Luke Bakka, a Marshalltown truck driver, fell ill with blood poisoning after a sheet iron cut his arm during unloading last week. He was treated at a Marshalltown hospital and is reported to be improving.

About sixty relatives and neighbors surprised Mrs Andrew Arneson at her home on Friday to celebrate her fiftieth birthday. The gathering included visiting and a tray luncheon. Guests presented a purse of money as a gift.

Sale Report From Salem Church Ladies Aid

The dinner and sale of the Northeast and Southeast Ladies Aid facie ties of Salem church Tuesday amounted to 265.65 dollars. Of this total 80.05 dollars came from the dinner 100.25 dollars from the Northeast ladies sale and 85.35 dollars from the Southeast ladies sale.

Court Reconvenes in Nevada Under New Judge

The district court resumes in Nevada with Judge G T Garfield presiding in place of Judge O J Henderson who had an operation last week. Garfield will remain for the rest of the September term as the court reconvened Friday after a brief adjournment due to Henderson illness.

Lutheran Hour to Air Nationwide Broadcast

Beginning October 2 the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod will present a weekly half hour program at 9 p m Thursdays on the Columbia network. Thirty four stations coast to coast will join the paid network funded by the Lutheran Laymen s League and International Walther League for the Lutheran Synodical Conference of North America. The Rev E H Felten notes it aims to reach an audience of 50 to 55 million.

Poultry Marketing Meetings Planned Across Iowa

Officials from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Iowa State College will lead ten district conferences on poultry and egg marketing problems this fall. Producers and dealers are urged to bring vehicles to central meetings with a morning inspection of a produce house from 10 to 12 showing fattening killing dressing refrigerating and grading poultry. An afternoon program features speakers and time for person conferences with county agents and producers. The Nevada meeting is set for October 10 at the Nevada Poultry company plant.

Record of Sept 26 1900 reports T O Anderson of Sioux Falls S D shipping carloads of cattle from Colorado to be sold locally. It notes the McCallsburg Pilot joining the exchange table and the defeat of a freezing plant proposal 47 to 62, with plans to enlarge the ice house. It also reports the death of Truss Johnson, a longtime local character known for eccentricities.

Storm damage in rural territory near Roland and Nevada

A storm last Thursday caused damage between Roland and Nevada. Several trees and small buildings were blown over. At Fred Barrett's place eight miles southeast of Roland a large cattle barn and a windmill were wrecked. Heavy rains ended the drought and farmers began plowing the delayed fields.

The Nelson and Melohn crew, based at the Boyd pit southwest of town, operates 28 trucks on this year's road maintenance project. A new grade west of Roland will receive gravel next year per current plans.

Grove coached by Willard J. Grove wins first at the Waterloo Dairy Congress state high school dairy judging contest with Engelman as top individual. Dunkerton led by superintendent Jordan L. Larson and coach Arthur Bielefeldt tied for eighth and ninth among thirty three teams from vocational agriculture schools.

Hoversten Buys Interest in Ames Furniture Store

E J Hoversten has bought one quarter of Harry A Perry’s stake in the Alex Henderson Furniture store in Ames and will move there to manage the business. Perry heads to New Hampshire to start a new furniture concern. Hoversten, a former gravel contractor, will focus on the new venture while Mrs Hoversten remains in Marshalltown and plans to join him in Ames later.

Roland Vikings Lose To Marshalltown In Close Baseball Battle

Marshalltown defeated Roland 6 to 5 at Erickson Park in front of a large crowd. Lefty Charlson struck out 12 and made six defensive assists as Roland hitters collected 10 hits off Ramsey but scored only five. A rematch with Boone is planned for next Sunday at the local park after Thursday’s Radcliffe game was postponed.

Travelers approaching Roland will clearly see the town name painted on two sides of a water tank and on the roof of the Farmers Co-Operative elevator. Paint costs were covered by local business donations, with ten foot high letters readable from the ground and from air.

Plaque of Honor to Circle Theatre for sound upgrades

The Circle Theatre at Nevada will receive a plaque of honor from the Herald World next Tuesday evening for improved sound production. Mayor C F Wilson will present the award to Circle management. The theatre installed Western Electric Sound Equipment last December.
