Mrs. F M Smith of Oakland California wife of the borax king will adopt 100 girls and rear them as her own children. The 100 daughters will live in ten houses on a 35 acre tract near Arbor Villa with ten girls in each house. The first house is under construction and work on the other nine will start immediately.
An eightpenny nail with a hole in its head passes a curved galvanized wire. The nail is driven into the studding, the wire laid flat on the brick, and mortared. The bond remains solid if the building sags or sheeting shrinks, keeping brick and wall intact.

A corps of engineers for the Illinois Central surveys a proposed line extending from Cedar Rapids to Washington and on to Coppock to connect with the Iowa Central. The route would place Washington on four major railways, expanding its rail access beyond the Milwaukee cut off.
Four unknown men entered the Fair at Lone Tree owned by Schiller and Scholnik at 2 am. Night watchman Joe Vetek was bound and gagged as burglars ransacked the store and fled with about 500 dollars in goods. They escaped by breaking into the B I N railway handcar house, stealing four cars, and are believed to have headed west.
Roy Rounds, 15, son of Cyrus Rounds, was accidentally shot in the neck by his playmate Charles Arnold at Arnold's home in Shenandoah. A .38 caliber revolver, taken from a shelf, was fired though believed unloaded, the bullet lodging in the left lung.
Cedar Falls May 10 A 10 year old Riceville boy Lee Fox confessed to burning several barns and two houses after weeks of arson in the area. On being confronted with the last Monholan barn fire he admitted guilt and faced potential reform school sentencing.
In Onawa many farmers adopt sugar beet culture this year. James Crawford planted ten acres, Mr. Moss twenty five, and Dan Fairchild five. This is the first sugar beet effort in Monong county and draws attention. If successful, a larger area may be planted next spring. Aged Farmer Hanged Himself in Burr Oak Township May 1. James Matthews, 76, died by hanging after a dispute with his wife. his body was found in the barn areas, the day’s events ending in tragedy.

John Fairgraves, Valley Junction saloon keeper, files amendment challenging Iowa contempt statutes as unconstitutional. He argues courts derive power from the state constitution, making contempt procedures an improper invasion by the legislative branch and depriving defendants of jury trial rights.

Ames May 13 Drake University of Des Moines took the triangular intercollegiate field meet ahead of Grinnell and Ames. Drake scored 54 points, Grinnell 43, and Ames 38, in a closely fought contest.
John Sniley, a pearl fisher at Le Claire, found a pearl as big as a marble in a clam shell and sold it to Howe Brothers, jewelers at Clinton, for $1,000. In Madison, Wisconsin, the University defeated Iowa in a debate on the Construction of the Nicaragua Canal, with Wisconsin favoring the canal.
In Washington on May 12 an undercover probe by Chief Wilkie revealed an attempt to sell confidential communications between the attorney general and the secretary of war in the Neeley case. The middleman, posing as John B Dickenson, was William Davis Williams, Williams former private secretary to Congressman Brumm. Williams was dismissed. no charges filed as sale not completed. The papers included a draft attorney general opinion and a letter from Secretary Root, offered for 200 dollars.
Washington reports Pension Commissioner IL Clay Evans is pursuing pension sharks who target soldiers returning from the Philippines. Attorneys or crafters operate in San Francisco, Washington, and New York, with agents watching and disbarment likely. Soldiers are said to be eagerly pursuing pensions, paid by solicitors who charge up to two dollars and more for various disability cases.
