The Beland Community Club and American Legion post set memorial day duties. Committees named include Program led by M. D. Rod and Arthur J. Rod, Parade leaders F. A. Gorton and O. L. Turmo, Flowers chaired by A. R. Erickson and Mrs. Hosea Jondall, Grounds with B. H. Knudtson and park commissioners, Finance by S. A. Ericson and Joel Sandvold, Marshal Orville H. Olon, and Marshals list. Roland Community Club also named Agriculture, Public Improvement, Public Music, and Entertainment panels with members M. O. Rod, C. E. Hanson, Wm. Myrland, O. M. Thompson, I. Late Mrs. Gurine Skogerbo of Story City Dies at 98

Mrs. Gurine Skogerbo born June 23 1851 in Verstrand Stavanger Norway died April 28 1930 at the Old Peoples Home Story City at age 98. She came to America in 1881 lived in Story City 1881 1906 moved to Roland 1906 1927 returned to Story City funeral held at Old Peoples Home and Immanuel Lutheran with Rev Olaf Helen interment in Story City cemetery.

Lanark High Band Wins First in Illinois State Contest

Leonard J. Wierson announces Lanark high school band captured first place in class at the Illinois state contest in Champaign. The group advances to the national contest in Flint, Michigan. Wierson, in his sixth year, organized the band and built a top state program for small high schools.

C. T. Iverson, once a Roland grocer, has swapped his Grinnell operation for a Toledo grocery and is now running the Toledo store.

Countywide election called for school superintendent post

County Auditor O R Solem announces a convention on May 13 to elect a county school superintendent and fill two county board seats including a vacancy from A O Lee. Delegates from district school boards will elect the new officials.

Augsburg College Orchestra Pleases Salem Audience

A large audience enjoyed a Salem church concert by the Augsburg College Orchestra on Monday evening. Miss Emma Gaarde directed the ensemble, which toured the middle western states and featured instrumental solos and a reading by Signa Hedberg. Roy Quam, a local Augsburg College student, is a member of the orchestra.

Funeral Held For Mrs. O J Orton In Roland

Mrs. O J Orton daughter of Mr and Mrs A Skromme born in Norway 54 years ago died in an auto accident near Ortley South Dakota. The funeral Friday drew the largest crowd yet with Rev Ness and Rev Vestberg in charge. She leaves ten children and her aged parents plus many relatives including siblings Mrs J A Christian and Miss Carrie Skromme of Roland.

Unspirited Howard Township Primary Vote Totals

Howard township recorded 119 votes in the primary. W. O. Payne led the Congressional ticket 68 to 49 over Capt. Hull. The school board set the principal’s wage at 70 dollars per month. Joe Evenson and Mrs Thea Quam sailed from New York Thursday for Norway.

Prohibition Meeting Draws Skandinavians In Des Moines

Lars J. Skromme spoke at the state prohibition convention on The Prohibition Work Among the Skandinavians. Haldor J. Aarthun just returned from a four month trip to Norway. The Central Town district conference of the Norwegian Synod met in Huxley with Bergen church delegates O J Jacobson M A Anderson and East Bergen delegates M T Waula and Gunder Nelson attending.

New Calf Club Elects Officers

The Dairy Calf Club elected officers on Friday April 25 with Kermit Telg as president James Erickson as vice president Carroll Larson as secretary treasurer and Vern Larson as sergeant at arms The group plans to start activities May 15 due to calf shortages and has 12 members with a few prospects expected.

Boy Scout Circus Draws 500 Scouts to Ames Armory

More than 500 scouts from Tall Corn area council including Boone Green Carroll and Story counties will perform at the Iowa State College Armory in Ames on Friday May 2. The event starts at 7:45 p.m. with doors opening at 7 p.m. Tickets cost 85 cents for adults and 10 cents for children under 15. The program features four parts the Tenderfoot the First Class Scout and the Merit Badge Scout with entries parades demonstrations and pageants culminating in a bonfire and songs followed by benediction and taps.

Roland Volunteer Fire Department Elects Chief and Assigns Posts

The Roland Volunteer Fire Department held its annual meeting at the assembly room over the First National Bank. A. Ericson was elected chief and Peter P Teig as assistant chief. The group planned weekly summer practice runs and assigned section heads for Engine Hydrant Nozzle Ladder and Chemical.

Women Missionary Federation Meeting At Bergen Church

A large attendance filled Bergen church on Tuesday as the circuit Women’s Missionary Federation held forenoon afternoon and evening sessions with delegates from nearly every local congregation. Rev. Randall Boy Killed In Kamrar Auto Crash Near Webster City

Randall 21 year old Miles Johnson son of Mr and Mrs M O Johnson of Randall was fatally injured in an automobile accident near Kamrar Saturday evening. He died at 5 o clock Tuesday morning. Accompanied by Sam Tiernagel and Harvey Meller, the trio were en route to Webster City when Johnson lost control and the car went off the grade. Tiernagel and Meller escaped with minor bruises and sought help at a farm house, while Johnson was taken to Webster City hospital.

Roland on April 1 1930 counted 758 residents, down 71 from 1920 and down 10 from 1925. Richland township sits at 686, a drop of 19 from 1920. Nevada’s unofficial 1930 tally reaches 3187, up 469 from 1920, while Garden City reports 102 residents with no prior 1920 baseline.

The Donhowe Motor company of Story City has discontinued business in Roland and moved stock to Story City last week. They previously occupied Erickson garage and later the Knudtson building. they held the Ford agency in this territory.
