First National Bank in Roland Closed

The town’s only bank, First National Bank, closed its doors with a notice from the board of directors to protect depositors. A receiver, A. L. Lawrence, arrived from Inwood Iowa to liquidate assets. Local officials consider forming a clearing house and a 5 member committee will report at a mass meeting at 7 30 this evening at the school house inviting farmers and townspeople to attend.

Durby and Duea Wed in Bergen Parsonage Ceremony

Miss Ruth Durby and Victor Duea united in marriage at the Bergen parsonage with Rev. M O Sumstad officiating at 6 PM. Attendants were Miss Bernice Durby and Benjamin Duea. A two course dinner for ten followed at the bride’s home. The bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter Darby, grew up locally and graduated Milford High School in 1929. The groom, son of Mrs Odne Howen, has lived in Nevada recently and worked at Harris Auto Service. they will reside in Nevada.

Fire at Cecelia Christian Farm Narrows to Suspected Arson

Sam R. Starr from Des Moines investigated a Monday blaze that destroyed a corn crib and a machine shed on the Mrs. Cecelia Christian farm 12 miles north of Roland. Officials believe the simultaneous fires and the insurance stake prompt doubts of accidental cause and may lead to arrests if arson is proven.

Mass Meeting For Clearing House In Roland

A mass meeting will be held at 7 30 this Thursday at the school house to arrange a clearing house for the community to replace a bank until one is opened. Everyone is urged to attend.

McCallsburg High Faces Roland After District Shuffle

The district realignment will cut two U S Representatives and shift territory. Arthur Rasmussen returns to class after four weeks out to help pick corn. The high school practices against Nevada on Nevada’s floor. The junior high declamatory contest is set for Wednesday at 8 PM in the auditorium. P T A meets next Tuesday December 9 with a program of singing exercises and talks. McCallsburg teams fell to Roland 27 16 and 14 10 last Wednesday. Friday December 5 they host Story City on the Iceal floor with both squads in action.

Big P. T. A. Meeting Draws Large Roland Crowd

One of the largest audiences at a Roland P. T. A. meeting heard Rev. Olaf Holen speak and music from school students. Dr. J. A. Snyder outlined protective diphtheria treatment and the association plans to begin the school program soon. The next meeting is set for January 7.

The Bergen Ladies Aid society raised 477 dollars and five cents from their Thanksgiving Day parish house event. Dinner contributed 193 dollars and twenty cents, while sale of articles added 283 dollars and eighty five cents.

Confirmation and Church Activities at Bergen Lutheran

The church outlines upcoming events including Confirmation class next Saturday at 10, Sunday School and Bible Classes at 10 and 11, Boy Scouts weekly, and Holy Communion the last service of the year. Great Lakes Pipe Line unloads steel pipes for ten miles

The first shipment of pipe for a Great Lakes Pipe Line project arrived last week here. Six carloads were unloaded with four more soon, totaling ten carloads. Each carload yields a mile of pipe, enough for ten miles. Pipes are 32 feet long, weigh over 600 pounds, and will be welded in ground. The Britson Lumber grounds will store them until crews arrive from Minnesota, possibly taking months.
