Double Funeral Held for Lena Danielson and Sam Britson

A double funeral was held at Berwen church for Lena Britson Danielson and Sam Britson, siblings from Roland, who died within a week of each other. Rev. W. B. Scarvie officiated. burial followed at Roland cemetery. Survivors include multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren, with detailed family ties listed.

Winters couple to take teaching posts in Glen Ellyn Illinois

Mr. and Mrs. M. P. Winters of Storm Lake spent Monday night at the Ole Christopherson home en route to Glen Ellyn Illinois where Mr Winters will serve as manual training supervisor in the high school. Both have taught in Storm Lake for six years and resigned last spring. Glen Ellyn, a residential city of about ten thousand near west Chicago.

Cancelled China Lectures After Auto Wreck

A telegram says Merril Distad and Reidar Daehlin must cancel their Bergen church lecture Friday due to injuries from a train collision near Albert Lea Minnesota. The brothers, sons of missionaries to China, were touring the area last week to schedule talks. They are reported as recovering in a local hospital and have life safely.

Roland Golf Club City Tournament Open to Entrants

The Roland Golf Club hosts a city tournament at the local course with 18 hole qualifying rounds this week. The 16 lowest scores qualify for the championship flight and must be submitted by Monday morning. Match play runs all week to decide the champion, with 36 holes in the final.

Arrest Report From Weekend Roundup

G Stangeland, employed by L S Larson, was arrested Monday by Sheriff J R Hattery and Marshall Leonard Larson on petty larceny charges after stolen articles were found. Also detained were Christ Holt of Story City for DUI and Lewis Hanson and Nels Olson of Gilbert for intoxication, all held at the county jail.

Dowell Visits Des Moines as Congress Tour Reaches Seventh District

Congressman C C Dowell of Des Moines toured the seventh district Friday visiting friends. He and Mrs Dowell recently returned from Washington and traveled overland. Dowell said Iowa remains the garden spot despite parched soil, and is in better shape than eastern states where crops are nearly ruined.

Vikings Open Hardin County Baseball League At Erickson Park

The Roland Vikings host Union today at Erickson Park in the league opener with a 3:00 PM start. Sundays trip to Buckeye produced a 3 to 2 loss after a one inning game was deemed unofficial due to heat.

Lee Accepts Presidency at Scan Scandinavia Junior College

A. O. Lee, former Roland schools superintendent, has accepted the job as president of the junior college at Scan dinavia Wisconsin and moved there with his family from Decorah last week. He taught in Roland for eight years and after leaving last year has farmed his father's Decorah area. The post pays $2000 annually with a free house and other inducements.

Boyd Reunion Planned at Erickson Park

The Boyd family holds its annual reunion at Erickson Park on Sunday August 17. A noon picnic will be followed by a program and afternoon sports for attendees.

Died at County Home Miss Caroline Nelson

Miss Caroline Nelson died this morning at the County Home after months of illness. She was sister to Mrs. Rebecca Johnson of this place and Nels J. Nelson of Story City. She had suffered poor health for many years.

Rain Brings Relief After Long Dry Spell

Showers Tuesday night and again last evening gave relief from the heat in the vicinity. This is the first rain here since July 5, but the rain did not reach the area north and east of Roland where threshing was underway this morning.

The Roland band travels to McCallsburg for an open air concert tomorrow evening. Business men of McCallsburg have hired the Roland and Zearing bands for a summer series, this being the second Roland appearance.

Bridges Rebuilt On M. and St. L. Near Bear Creek

A train from Marshalltown on the M. and St. L. railway delivered a pile driving machine and crew to the area to reconstruct bridges. Work begins with Bear Creek bridge on the town’s west edge, followed by another bridge farther west, with all new piles replacing the old ones.

S. T. Rasmussen leases the L. Shafland building on Main Street to operate a popcorn business. The premises are being cleaned and redecorated. The remaining Shafland jewelry stock and fixtures were sold at auction Saturday evening.

A suspected amateur burglar pried a window Saturday evening into the M. and St. L. railway station and took 40 cents in pennies from the money till. W. A. Cunningham, the local agent, notified company officials of the theft.

Miss Grizelda Morse a music teacher from Wyoming played the lead part of Miss Wyoming in a town pageant during the diamond jubilee celebration week. The event formed part of the jubilee program in Wyoming.

The completed school census shows 9 044 persons aged 6 to 21 in the county. Ames leads with 2 629 prospective students, Nevada 862, Roland 448, Story City 380, McCallsburg 846, Milford township 262, and Howard township 81.

The Marshall Canning company began the 1930 pack of sweet corn on Tuesday and will run for six to seven weeks. It will process 258 acres of Golden Bantam first, then 1000 acres of Country Gentleman. Harsh weather reduced yields, making a record pack unlikely despite over 2000 acres of canning crops.

July Testing Report Shows Milk Yields Across Cattle Herds

In July the Story No 1 Cow Testing association reported 301 cows with 32 dry and an average production of 602 pounds milk and 22.8 pounds fat. A F Varnum led with 639 pounds milk and 29.8 fat from 9 Jerseys. Sam H Tweet was second with 879 pounds milk and 28.6 fat from 14 Holsteins. Other top fat averages included Teig 27.8, Brandt 27.4, Holland 27.0, Mayer Johnson 26.2, and Risdal 26.1. Eleven cows reached 40 pounds fat, none hit 50. High cows were Ell en with 1621 pounds milk and 47.0 fat, Spot had 998 pounds milk and 44.9 fat. Of 24 members, pasture types varied and six supplemented with dry roughage while 17 used low protein concentrates and 4 used high protein concentrates.

Highways Consume Farm Land in Iowa Assessments

New statewide figures from the Weather and Crop Bureau show 4.68 percent of farm deeded area is occupied by buildings feeds lots and public highways. The share ranges from 6.06 percent in Winnebago county to 2.74 percent in Jackson, with about 2.5 percent statewide in highways yielding little income from crops and effectively adding at least 2 percent to annual farm overhead.
