Editor notes two damaging pests affecting local crops. Cut worming in alfalfa and beet fields requires mechanical control or burning. spraying Paris green with lime or dusting with insect powder can curb beet and cantaloupe pests. Recommendations include timing, proper dilution, and ensuring leaf undersides are treated.
A public Fourth of July picnic is planned in the city park under caretaker Barkley with a program of patriotism and good citizenship led by Mayor McDonald and a committee including Geo Hammond Prof Burbank and Mrs Kellogg. The schedule runs 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. with baskets, ground cloths, and family groups, plus choruses, an oration, and readings from the Declaration. Also noted is a baseball game Rocky Ford vs Pueblo Rovers 10 9 won by Pueblo, and an upcoming game in La Junta on the Fourth with a $100 purse. Prof John W. Wetzel will read Nicholas Nickleby at the Methodist church June 26 at 8 p.m. with Miss Steidley in concert. Admission 20 cents adults 10 cents children.
Wetzel's success contracts with League v. Texas strawberry growers are celebrated by the Leman G C H association. Compliments hail quick sales, high prices, prompt returns via a money order system, and well organized shipments. Garwood and Hale praised for integrity and leadership. Local notices advertise hay, stray mare, sales, and assorted goods.
Advertisements show offers for shoes and hats at Phenicie's and Cline's Trimmed Hats plus ladies notices for Miss Ella at Price and Lance's opposite post office. New cane seed from E R Cook. Wettendorf's Grocery sells Chase and Sanborn teas and coffees and candy from Blank. Boarders wanted at C W Knapp stand. Saddle blankets offered by Mrs. D W Barkley direct from Navajo Faith Mission. Rocky Ford screens and doors advertised.
