State lands taxed in Otero county under 1902 law
The Otero county board of commissioners ordered the county treasurer to assess and tax state lands for the years 1902 1905 1904 and 1905. About 45000 acres would be taxed on purchasers interests and improvements, generating more than 50000 in revenue. The move aims to correct decades long nonenforcement and ensure state lands pay their share of government costs.
