Normal Institute Round Table Talks Draw City Teachers

The second week of the Normal Institute drew growing attendance in our city with sessions on parent teacher roles, education of the hand, and the value of kindergarten. Lectures by Dr Roberts and Mrs McFarlane entertained and informed as teachers and county superintendents engaged in round tables and receptions.

Elks Benefit Play The Elk's Tooth at Grand

The Elk's Tooth benefit at the Grand drew a near full house despite damp weather and a threatening storm. The burlesque on finance and benevolent assimilation impressed with staging and costumes though dialogue and plot were weak. Local talent supplied music and cast, with Earl Haskins praised as a standout. Mrs. A Coleman returned from nine months in California.

City Council Holds Short Session and Water Meter Bid

The city council met Tuesday night with no bills passed. Otis Brown Co. won the contract to set 500 water meters at $525. Streets issues dominated debate including Catalps avenue extension and Elm avenue widening. The city and county may share land costs, and Railroad avenue widening proceeded toward required width.
