Memorial and Decoration Day Observed With Notable Interest
Memorial services opened the annual G A R and allied societies program at the M E church drawing a large crowd. Two Costly Hail Storms Hit Rocky Ford Area
Last week two severe hail storms swept the Rocky Ford country within three days. The first storm damaged central valley orchards and cantaloupes with heavy losses on fruit and garden crops. sugar beets were only delayed. The second storm struck the southern irrigated region and range country, with heavy hits on orchards near Rocky Ford. Senator Crowley estimates orchard losses at about 10 000 dollars with 2700 dollars insured. G A Jones reports 720 dollars insured with insufficient coverage. Insurance companies operated heavily beforehand and are urged to honor payments, as past hail renewals raise concerns over payouts. Local insurers in Otero county through Rocky Ford Trading Co and Farmers & Merchants Bank issued many policies recently and faced large exposure.
