Hartley Family Pioneer Merchant Leader Dies in Rocky Ford
Gorton Hartley, longtime Rocky Ford dry goods businessman and elder in the Presbyterian church, died after a prolonged illness. He and his sons Walter, Henry, and Paul conducted Hartley’s Dry Goods. he had previously lived in Missouri and St. Louis before settling in Knob Noster and later Rocky Ford. His widow Minerva Lilly and sister-in-law Etta Lilly survived, with six children in all. Hartley was noted for vigorous business life and devout church service.

Lightning Kills Man in Beet Field Near Town
Filiberto Barela was struck by lightning Wednesday afternoon while tending a beet field on the Bady ranch five miles from town. He died instantly as his clothes burned before water arrived to fight the blaze. The body was moved to Undertaker Sprinker’s parlors and Coroner Green held no inquest after an informal examination.
