The items mention Rocky Ford Colorado, Ordway, Minneap olis fares, and the National Educational association gathering. Numerous names appear including B Bolles H J Woodbury G W Rogers and Ida Gonant.
In June 1893 an aging mountain man rides into Rocky Ford on a weary cayuse and drifts toward the Hotel DeSeeley. A reporter with Almon J. Gray recalls interviewing the sleepy, tobacco-chewing horseman as evening settles in. The encounter ends with the man remarking that it is almost time for bed.
Gray and an old mountaineer recount a brutal Fourth of July from the plains era. Aleck, eager to kill an Injun, is exposed by a camp and punished by Kiowas with Kit Carson mediating. Aleck’s fate is sealed as he is shot and burned in retaliation for a slain Injun.
