Denver reports three Idaho peace officers Moyer Haywood and Pettibone faced extradition for complicity in the Steunenberg assassination. Details describe secret arrests, incommunicado detention, and a multi-faceted inquiry citing Harry Orchard’s confession and corroborating evidence of planned killings against Colorado and Idaho officials.
The jury acquitted Pat Crowe of robbing Edward A. Cudahy in the 1900 kidnapping case after fifteen hours of deliberation. The sensational affair, tied to a $25,000 ransom and a $50,000 reward, sparked a nationwide manhunt and later led to Crowe’s indictment in Council Bluffs on a separate streetcar hold up.
Maurice L. Caplan, 31, of 1419 East Sixteenth avenue, was shot dead by a highwayman at 9 30 p m Friday in the presence of his wife and child and a friend. The robber secured 12 50 but demanded the full amount Caplan carried. Police found 290 in Caplan's pockets after the shooting. Caplan, proprietor of the Denver Auction Company at Eighteenth and Broadway, died protecting his money as he raised a footstool to ward off the thief. Detectives sought the killer but fled the area, aided only by a seven year old girl who described the suspect as five seven, with a dark mustache, in dark clothes, and wearing a white handkerchief over his face that slipped around his neck.
John Conley, condemned for a double murder in Albuquerque, New Mexico, received a one week reprieve from Governor Hagerman to allow investigations into alleged insanity. The reprieve was sent via a perilous relay to Taos by messenger after a night ride through rugged terrain, and Sheriff Lucero announced the hanging was canceled as dawn broke.
In Washington a birthday event honoring Susan B. Anthony marked her eighty sixth year at the Church of Our Father. Public figures and suffrage delegates from Baltimore attended. Rev. Charles Moyer William Haywood and G A Pettibone leaders of the Western Federation of Miners were arrested in Denver charged with complicity in Frank Stuenenberg s assassination. They arrived in Boise Idaho Monday under strong Colorado officer guard aboard a special train en route to the Idaho Penitentiary with adjutant general Wells and other officers present.
Clement Armand Fallieres assumed office as president of France at the Elysee Palace. Loubet departed to private life as crowds hailed Fallieres with cheers and a 21 gun salute. The transfer occurred at 4 PM with cabinet members present. Fallieres accepted the duties and urged continued ministry service, with Premier Rouvier submitting cabinet resignation that evening.
A Walsenburg dispatch reports a gas explosion at 10 AM Monday in the Sunshine mine of Victor Fuel Co at Maitland. Four miles away, fourteen men were killed and bodies recovered badly burned. A small pocket of gas ignited by a miner’s lamp is suspected. Nearly 200 men were at work nearby. if caused by dust, more would have died.
