Detective Simpson races to stop a planned theft of the rajah's ruby as Wichman in disguise uses forgery and misdirection to steal time from the detective. The Astor House clash ends with the clerk nearly delivering the gem before a superior intervenes and exposes the ruse.
The Colorado Senate negotiates to resume business after a stalemate while killing most House bills. Key actions include confirming H L Acker as metalliferous mine inspector, appoving state canal and eight hour laws, and shelving many appropriation measures. The House adjourns after routine committee work and Cantrell reports.
State Game Warden Callicotte reports about 3,000 in fines collected from violations of the state game law in 1893, but less than half has been turned into the treasury. He is notifying justices to promptly remit the funds to the state.
Last Monday morning the Denver Cigarmakers' union initiated a lock-out after about 200 workers found the plant doors closed and notices posted announcing no work. Leaders say they will press wage cuts of 12 percent, while manufacturers demand the cut or no work. Also, Joseph E. Paisley withdraws his suit against H. B. Chamberlin related to Fort Worth Park Place Land Company, stating he acted under a misapprehension of facts.
A London Standard dispatch from St Petersburg describes a government inquiry into Onor prison on Sakhalin Island revealing brutal beatings and mutilations. Murders and cannibalism are alleged to have occurred to end convicts’ misery. Throughout 1892 corpses were transported to Rikovskaya with little inquiry and no medical review. An ex-convict named Shakoff is named as chief perpetrator and promoted to Inspector.
A passenger train crossed an abandoned rail on the Missouri Kansas & Texas line at a White Oak bayou bridge. The baggage and mail coaches left the track while the smoker collapsed onto them. Brakeman Joe Elliott was shot in a volley during the rescue. Lou Morris and H. H. Halton suffered serious injuries as passengers and crew freed those hurt. A relief train transported the wounded to Houston hospitals.
