State fines from game law to fund schools urged

Last Monday morning the Denver Cigarmakers' union initiated a lock-out after about 200 workers found the plant doors closed and notices posted announcing no work. Leaders say they will press wage cuts of 12 percent, while manufacturers demand the cut or no work. Also, Joseph E. Paisley withdraws his suit against H. B. Chamberlin related to Fort Worth Park Place Land Company, stating he acted under a misapprehension of facts.

Squalid Convict Prisons Reported Abuses in Onor Island POW Camp

A London Standard dispatch from St Petersburg describes a government inquiry into Onor prison on Sakhalin Island revealing brutal beatings and mutilations. Murders and cannibalism are alleged to have occurred to end convicts’ misery. Throughout 1892 corpses were transported to Rikovskaya with little inquiry and no medical review. An ex-convict named Shakoff is named as chief perpetrator and promoted to Inspector.

Train Wreckers At Work On Narrow Escape

A passenger train crossed an abandoned rail on the Missouri Kansas & Texas line at a White Oak bayou bridge. The baggage and mail coaches left the track while the smoker collapsed onto them. Brakeman Joe Elliott was shot in a volley during the rescue. Lou Morris and H. H. Halton suffered serious injuries as passengers and crew freed those hurt. A relief train transported the wounded to Houston hospitals.
