The Cleveland strike at Brown Holsting and Conveying Co renews after a government arbitration attempt failed to recognize union committees or reinstate fired workers. Non union worker F W Buckingham fled the mob, fired shots to deter stones, but nobody was hurt. Police escorted Buckingham home.
Tammany Hall's Executive committee in New York on July 31 endorsed the Chicago Democratic National ticket of Bryan and Sewall. The endorsement passed by acclaim after a push to wait for the state convention was defeated 71 to 4.
London July 31 Sir Matthew White Ridley announced in Parliament that after reviewing all circumstances he advised the queen to treat Dr Jameson and his fellow prisoners as first class misdemeanants. They have been returned to Holloway jail.
Athens reports that the Greek government will enforce strict controls to block volunteers and war material from leaving the country for Crete. In the interior of Macedonia another clash is reported between Greek bands and Turkish troops.
A Havana dispatch says Cuban revolutionary leaders and supporters, including Adela Azcuy a Cuban Louise Michel, and nine companions, were captured by Spanish forces near Pena Blanca and will face court martial at Pinar del Rio. A sister and father of insurgent Juan Pablo Sarduy were captured and imprisoned for court martial. In Manzanillo, Colonel Sanches Parron with 300 Andalusian troops defeated a rebel camp at Larendonda, freeing women and children.
In Cleveland on August 2, a strike at Brown Hoisting Works sparked a mob attack on non union workers. Shots were fired wounding John Prinz as militia and police were deployed. the company intends to hire new workers after accusing strikers of violating the settlement terms.

The state Democratic committee estimates a Johnson majority of 40,000 to 50,000, while the Populist committee claims 25,000. In Montgomery County whites vote at about 90 percent, and Republican leaders reportedly advised blacks not to vote, explaining the small black turnout.
The French liner La Bourgogne rescued ten German sailors from the sinking German bark Ernest after a waterlogged condition.
